BBC (British Broadcasting Company)

The BBC is the worlds largest Broadcast company and the worlds first national broadcast company founded in 1922 it was set up as a joint venture (an agreement in which multiple parties pull there resources to get to a specific goal). . Publicly funded from 1927 with an annual budge of £4,000,000,000 which is gotten trough Tv licences. A TV licence is used for receiving programmes from equipment such as a TV set top box, Vido or DVD recorder, computer or mobile phone to watch or record programmes. The annual cost of  a colour TV licence £145.50 and for a black and white £49.

The BBC is Britains largest public service broadcaster (PSB). This is a term that says that the BBC’s intentions are purely for the public and not that of commercial. It is run by the BBC trust. The BBC trust is a council Led by the Chairman, the Trust is made up of 12 Trustees with a wide breadth of experience. All Trustees are appointed by the Queen on advice from Ministers after an open selection process. The aim of the BBC trust is to manage the goals altogether of the BBC.

“Our job is to get the best out of the BBC for licence fee payers. We set the strategic direction of the BBC.  We hold the Executive to account for its performance of its functions, and for its compliance with the law, with regulatory requirements, and with the policies, guidelines and codes that we set.  We are supported by the Trust Unit, a team of professional BBC staff who report directly to us and who are operationally independent from the rest of the BBC.

Strategy

We set the Corporation’s objectives – both public service and commercial arms. We formally assess proposals from the BBC to change or to establish new services.

Performance of BBC services

We check that services meet audiences’ expectations through an in-depth review every five years.  In every Annual Report, we report on how well the BBC is delivering the six public purposes set out in its Royal Charter. Before we take any major decisions, we carry out consultations.

Value for money

We check that the BBC’s operations are as efficient as they can be. We set and monitor efficiency targets and commission regular, independent value-for-money reviews. And through the annual budget-setting process, we check that money is where it needs to be in order to deliver our strategy.

Complaints

We are the final point of appeal within the BBC for complaints, including editorial, fair trading and TV licensing. If a complaint is upheld, we can impose sanctions on the BBC.”        (http://www.bbc.co.uk/bbctrust/our_work/)

The Royal Charter is the constitutional basis for the BBC. It sets out the public purposes of the BBC, guarantees its independence, and outlines the duties of the Trust and the Executive Board. The current Charter runs until 31 December 2016.

These are the main morals they want to keep within the BBC

  • Sustaining citizenship and civil society

  • Stimulating creativity and cultural excellence
  • Representing the UK, its nations, regions and communities
  • Bringing the UK to the world and the world to the UK

The Murdock empire

He owns shares in many company’s and have tried to buy out his competitors many times, for example Virgin media. But the owner Richard Branson said that there would be no competitors if everyone’s under one mans control.

BSkyB  is a company  that operates sky digital subscriptions in the UK and Ireland. It produces Tv content and owns several Tv channels. Its the uk’s largest pay tv provider. More than 30% of the equity (stocks ect parts of a company in which people own) is owned by news corp.

Current channels owned under the sky company. This chart does not include the “package” channels. which are channels that come with whatever sky package you buy. for example theres a movie package where you get sky movies.

Virgin media

Virign media is one of the other leading media providers in britian today the main rival to the Murdoch empire. Owned by the powerhouse Richard Branson  started up as a record business in 1968.
